Ready to breakthrough your fears?
I was recently browsing through one of my favorite bookstores, Rizzoli, when I came across Twyla Tharp’s book, The Creative Habit. It’s a practical guide to cultivating your creativity. Not far into the book, I came across her list of fears that strike to keep her from fulfilling on her creative impulse. It seems a bit hard to believe she might have these fears, really, as she has had a powerful impact as one of America’s greatest choreographers with a long list of achievements on the stage, in theater, and, in movies.
So I was curious, what are the five fears of a well-accomplished creative?
When I read them over, I found them so perfectly articulated that I actually got out my notebook and wrote them down. Here’s what keeps Twyla Tharp awake at night as she embarks on a creative project.
1. People will laugh at me.
2. Someone has done it before.
3. I have nothing to say.
4. I will upset someone I love.
5. Once executed, the idea will never be as good as it is in my mind.
Brilliant! The last one struck me the hardest – she had articulated in words that often buried fear I have when I embark on a new creative endeavor.
My storyline constantly reminds me that while my initial idea may seem brilliant, I will never be able to execute it quite like I imagine it, and I will look like a fool, resulting in being laughed at. (ick, who wants to look like a fool and be laughed at?)
Phew! I took an important step, I shared it out loud and in writing. This is the beginning of speaking, articulating and acknowledging the fears that lurk around stopping me from even starting. I’m now considering starting a fool’s club so I can get really comfortable feeling foolish and creating in spite of my fears!
What are the fears that stop you?
Recently, I was asked how to address what stops us and how do we deal with it.
Here’s the first place to start. Articulate the fear.
What is the fear telling you? What is it saying about you? How is it trying to get your attention?
Name it. Put your words on it. Be curious about the storyline.
This seems easier than it actually is and may require you to go through a few layers of writing, singing it, or acting it out to get right into the essence of it.
Once you unveil the truth of the fear – it will literally begin to open up and give you more space. It will no longer have that binding grip on you.
So try it. Try it right now. Write down your top five fears.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
*****
Here are my latest five, if you need further inspiration:
1. No one understands me.
2. I don’t know what to do.
3. I’ll have to do everything myself.
4. I won’t make the right decisions.
5. It won’t fly.
*******
After articulating your fears, what is the next step in addressing them?
Share them.
Tell them to someone who can listen, not judge. Not comment, not even try to talk you out of your fear.
Just witness you, witness the fear that’s arising, witness the alchemy of what happens when you speak it out loud and share it with another.
The second step of sharing is incredibly powerful. There is truly profound alchemy in it.
To help facilitate deep openings, expansions, breakthroughs, and magical transformations, I created a coaching program to call together a group of women to stand for, witness, and grow as unique individuals in pursuit of a creative endeavor, day-to-day expansion, and reinvention of any desired sort – bring it all!
Join me and eight others for exploring the fears, the blocks, the stuff holding you back (but not for long because there will be breakthroughs!) in:
Sacred in the City circle starting on Thursdays, March 24th at 7pm in Manhattan.
See more details here: http://soulcallingsonline.com/services/sacred-in-the-city-march-april-2011/
Have a fearless week-end!
If you are feeling really fearless, please post your 5 fears here as a comment (on the top of the page click the comment button) and you can use a different name if that feels more comfortable for you.

You possess 1,000 years of experiences
How much time and energy do you commit to knowing and following your higher purpose? What could happen if you took some time to inquire, explore and be curious about this for you?
You see, no one, anywhere is exactly like you. No one has ever been quite like you before now or in the future. You are completely unique. You are a completely unique divine spark of life force unlike anything previously existed in time and space. If that’s the truth, how do you want to spend your time, energy, gifts and talents? What is your purpose and how can you awaken and open to this now?
I’m so excited to announce that I have created a new program to explore our very own uniqueness and our very own unique connection to the sacred specifically for the NYC woman. Scroll down for more details to see if this program is right for you or someone you know.

Let’s play a game.
Just take five minutes with me right now. (C’mon just five minutes!) Set a timer, your phone clock, or your watch.
Close your eyes.
Take a deep breath, or two, or three.
Allow your whole body to relax right where you are.
Feel all the way down into your feet and then drop your awareness down into the earth below your feet.
Feel deeply connected into the earth like a rooted Elm.*
Now imagine you are sitting next to your oldest truest most magnificent self. She (or he) is at least 1,000 years old and so gentle and thoughtful, having had every possible experience again and again. She is radiant, full of light and love, compassion and glory. She imbues this deeply loving wisdom and understanding of any situation, challenge or frustration you may have. She uplifts you and holds you. She reassures you like no one ever has and you resonate with this assurance that indeed, everything is in perfect timing.
As you tune in here, notice what other qualities your truest self possesses. Is she commanding? Witty? Does she heal and transform? Does she teach and guide? Does she provide confidence and courage? Is she strong, healthy, and vital? What is her vision of you, your body, the world, the deepest wishes you hold close to your heart?
Take a few moments to imagine all the qualities of your truest, highest, most magnificent self and feel all of it throughout your entire body using your senses. Have fun, go deep, experience the great expansion of 1,000 years of experiences being you.
What does she tell you? What does she want you to know? What does she remind you of?
Now let all the wisdom, divine love, light, radiance, all those unique qualities she possesses to come into you. Allow her to merge with you and you to know yourself as your wisest, most radiant self, with 1,000 years of experiences to draw upon.
When the timer goes off or you finish, open your eyes. Enjoy moving through your day with your best friend at your side or nearby and call upon her whenever you need for any reason whatsoever.

P.s. *I love Elm trees. I’d guess they are part of a royal lineage they are so regal. The first time I saw one I had arrived to visit the Northeast to see friends. I saw this grand old Elm across the street and I completely freaked out. It was like I was witnessing a Grand King vibrating majesty, commanding my attention and my awe. I felt a need to bow to such a grand royal living beings.

21 Acts of LOVE
21 Acts of LOVE
www.SoulCallingsOnline.com
This list has been put together to remind us of the many opportunities in life that help to open the heart. Please find one or two that resonate with you and try them out.
Or better, find one that makes you uncomfortable and try it. Get out of your comfort zone and discover where it takes you. It might just open your heart!
1. Do something for someone else! Magically this can take us out of our heads and our own misery and inspire us to feel positive again. Create some magic for someone else.
2. Anonymous acts of good. These are surprisingly powerful to do and instantly create magic for you and the receiver. Here are some ideas to get started. Add your personal spin into each one or create your own: Pay it forward for coffee or cupcakes for those in line behind you, leave behind a beautiful bouquet of flowers, leave a $20 bill where someone can find it, send someone tickets to an event, write an anonymous note to someone who has negatively impacted you and tell them how wonderful they are and how much they have touched your life. Doing any anonymous acts of good can work wonders for you and open up magic in your life and the lives of others.
3. Donate to a charity or a cause you feel strongly about. Where do you want to help? Here are some of my favorite: www.LineageProject.org, www.Womenforwomen.org, www.heifer.org, www.nrdc.org, www.kiva.org or www.joinfite.org, www.CARE.org. Research the amazing and inspiring work people are already creating out there and decide to be part of it.
4. Laugh. Laugh more and make others laugh more also. It’s so important to laugh! Remember not to take yourself so seriously. Go rent a funny movie. Go to a Yoga Laugh class – these exist and here’s the website to find a class near you www.LaughterYoga.org. It’s for real!
5. Go on a negativity diet. . . catch yourself making negative comments or gossiping and stop! Try this for three days at least. If you slip up just redirect the conversation towards the positive or end it altogether. Notice who you easily slip into a critical mode with and ask them to help you stop doing this. Yes, they will call you Pollyanna and so what! You will feel so much better. If you see the glass half full, then it is. If you see the glass half empty, then it is. So make a conscious choice about what view You want to take. Thoughts become reality so think the uplifting ones!!!
6. Make a date with someone you’ve been neglecting and go somewhere really beautiful. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but step out of the usual routine and try something new. Have tea, get dessert, share an appetizer. Catch up and tell them how much you appreciate them.
7. Make memories. This one can be a bit challenging for me as I am not too sentimental and tend to forget about photos and other memorabilia. Yet, creating special mementos reminds us of good times. These can become treasured moments. Who could you send a photo or photo album to of a shared memory?
8. Write an ‘old fashioned’ thank you note (one that gets sent in the mail, not via e-mail) for no real reason except to tell the recipient how much they mean to you and thank them for being in your life!
9. Send Valentine cards – my personal favorite – reminding those that you do love how much they touch your life! Have fun, be creative . . remember the second grade when everyone took home a whole box of cards with silly slogans and poetic verses. . . .it felt good!
10. Go to a new venue. Have you always wanted to go to the Opera, attend a special event, a museum exhibit, a car show? Research it and buy the tickets to go. Don’t delay and have fun finding others who might share this with you. invite someone to come along with you. Do something new!
11. Adopt a pet! Through a Secret Santa gift exchange I received a fish! Yes, you read that right. The gift exchange rules stated it had to be purple and under $10 and I received a Thai Beta fish! I named him Ramses and fell in love! Who knew how much joy that little fish would give me. When I had to travel he also brought loads of fun and joy to my friend’s office and her colleagues. Animals easily open our hearts. If you can’t adopt, go walk a neighbor’s dog or cat sit for a friend.
12. Shake your body. Dance. Jump up and down. This is sooo good for shaking out a bad mood, stress, worry, or anxiety. Literally shake it out. Put on some fast music with upbeat rhythms and shake your body. Need some inspiration on this. . go to www.wisewildfree.com and explore Qoya. Try a Zumba class, jump on a trampoline or do 50 jumping jacks to Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It!’
13. Watch a movie and be transported to a different life! Feeling sad? Nothing like a good cry to feel completely refreshed. Go rent that drama or tragedy and let the tears roll. Just bring the tissues along!
14. Go outside. Just get yourself outside. Go for a walk. Thirty minutes of walking with no particular agenda can work wonders on your mood, your creativity, and your ability to be productive when you feel overwhelmed. It literally gets your energy moving. Turn off the phone and just wander and be curious. You will be so much more loveable!
15. Practice graciously receiving. Are you one of those people that always says, ‘Oh, no thank you.’? Instead, say ‘YES! Thank you! I’d love to!’ Then practice letting others help you and give to you. That provides you the opportunity to graciously receive. Believe it or not, we can get so habitual about saying no, this can be more challenging than it may be seem at first. So the next time someone asks you, ‘Would you like. . .? Say, Yes! Thank you! I’d love that!
16. Appreciation. Nothing helps the abundance in your life grow more than really appreciating the cornucopia of what you already have. So look around and make a list of 108 things that you are appreciative of in your life and all the generousness that already exists. This is a real heart-opener. Often we are focused on looking for the next thing, rather than the what is already present in your life. So go ahead slow down, look with wonder at all that you have created and really appreciate the creativity and genius of it and of you.
17. Ask. Ask others to help you. Ask for what you truly want. Be authentic. Don’t wait. The time is now. Share yourself.
18. Move towards fun. Take a baby step towards something you’ve always wanted to do or experience. Have you wanted to learn how to sing, but keep putting it off? Have you dreamed of trekking across New Zealand? Do you want to become a dance instructor? Do you want to perfect your culinary skills? What new creative outlet do you want to try? Be willing to be a beginner and find the pleasure in moving towards trying it out. You don’t have to be perfect. . . let that dream begin to take shape and start playing with it. Take a class, or a few private lessons, or gather a group who want to do the same. Play!
19. Align with GOD. Explore your direct connection with God, the Universe, and Spirit. How do you access this in your own life? Consciously begin creating this in a way that’s true for you. More than ever, accessing your own divine nature is available in a direct way and can be cultivated and expanded. Open to what would support you and your own spiritual nature. If you don’t know, be willing to explore. Read, take a class, visit a sacred place, or join a group exploring this. Be willing to open to the mystery of you and life around you.
20. Experience a spiritual teacher, coach, or healer to help you access and open to your own heart, self acceptance and healing in your life from the past or old beliefs that hold you back from fulfilling your hearts greatest callings. There is more support than ever before so lean in. We don’t grow by being alone. We grow in bearing witness to who we really are with others. Reach out. Lean in. Share your journey.
21. Be you! Yes, give yourself permission to really be YOU! Following your own likes and dislikes, enjoying what you enjoy, growing in the ways you truly want to grow, stretching to be all of who you are. Now. Don’t hold back anymore. Go for it. Laugh and love and share and grow and appreciate all along the way . . . . when you feel happy and open your heart, you naturally give others permission to join you and find their own happiness. It naturally expands. It’s truly magical!

Happy Winter Solstice!
Let’s celebrate the shortest day of the year! Why? Because it means that starting tomorrow the sunlight lasts just a few minutes longer and that feels good to the body and the soul! This time of year also marks the beginning of renewal and expansion. As the sun lingers longer in the sky so does our desire to create, imagine, and grow.
Right now growth is happening in the dark.
All the change and clearing and shifting is taking place in the dark. I don’t just mean literally in the dark but in the deepest places within you. It may sometimes feel like you ‘can’t see it yet’. Yet the seeds are being planting down inside the ground. The magic unfolds when we don’t ‘see’ it coming. What is coming to fruition starts in the dark until its ready to emerge.
I know that you are finding your way – quietly, gently and lovingly – like never before! It’s truly amazing. As you grow and expand, so too, does the Universe, your loved ones, and everyone you encounter. Trust me, when you shine your light, even from your sofa, it ripples out into the Universe sending a distinct message of love!

Thank you so much for allowing me to support you and your journey. Thank you for the opportunity to reflect on the shifting between light and dark in our days and nights and in our bodies and our souls.
I invite you to open to what is here for you at this place, at this time without trying to rush into spring, or push yourself into thinking “you should be. . .”.

Happy Winter Solstice to you and your loved ones.
The Art and Science of Gift Wrapping
Each of us has natural gifts and talents that get activated in a more distinct way around the holidays. Quickly, we slip into the roles that are most comfortable and, if we let it, these roles can be a real pleasure and a means of expressing who we are and how we feel connected to our community, family, and loved ones.
I’m here to encourage you to consider where your natural expression comes through at the holidays . . . are you a baker, builder, cook, gift wrapper, cleaner, playmate (someone has to keep the kids busy!), or, maybe you love to play Santa Claus? Do you enjoy giving out generous tips, paying it forward, buying gifts for children and giving lots away – how fun to just be a constant source of surprise and joy!
How do you create your own joy for the season? READ MORE

Are you ready to bust through your Winter Blues?
It’s been awhile since you’ve heard from me as I seem to have gotten caught up in my own tidal wave since my last newsletter and could barely come up for air.
November was filled with many starts and new adventures as well as some deep shifts and re-organization. . .and that doesn’t even include the Thanksgiving Holiday!
I launched a new workshop on getting unstuck that got everybody moving in new directions. I launched a weekly coaching circle with the Tribal Truth and Rochelle Scheick of Qoya. I attended the Ladies Who Launch Entrepreneurial Conference and the Sister Goddess Worldwide Reunion in Miami, supported Love Coach, Lauren Frances, on her NYC tour and still managed to take in Palm Springs with my family for Thanksgiving. Phew!
Now all of what I just listed was truly amazing and yet I must admit that I’ve also found my energy levels down, a strong desire to go back to bed most of the day, and a lot of hesitation as the end of the year nears. It turns out a lot of my clients are feeling the same way, too! That lead me to realize, we are all feeling it!
It’s my mission this month to bring in more ease and support for the holidays and graciously ending 2010! Are you ready for a lift in moving through the holidays and wrapping up the year in ease and grace? Maybe even tune into the magic and mystery of the season?
If you are feeling a yes! then . . .
Let’s reinvigorate your charm and get you back into your game.
I am introducing two new ways to lean in for more support – from your own sofa and in person.
Dial in, tune in, and feel better in an hour. Check out my four week tele-salon starting Tuesday, December 14th at 9pm (EST)/ 6pm (PST).
Gather in-person to complete 2010 and ring in the New Year with clarity, focus and the renewed sense of your purpose for 2011. Join me for my New Year’s Eve retreat in upstate NY starting Thursday evening, Dec 30th – Sunday, January 2nd, 2011.
Do you feel like hibernating?
We are heading right into the deepest time of winter in the Northern Hemisphere which means less light, more days of cold, snow and wind blowing through and the desire to slow down and turn inward. It’s ironic that this also marks a busy time of year of gathering, sharing, exchanging and celebrating with one another, our families, our colleagues, and our communities. Sometimes it leaves you feeling torn between doing what feels natural to you against getting stretched in too many directions and trying to make too many people happy, forgetting all about what makes you happy!
It’s times like this in our lives it’s so important to remember some good ole’ common sense:
Eat good food. Drink plenty of water. Get good sleep.
I know it’s not always that simple so for the more complicated things that are arising let’s welcome it all and bring it into my tele-salon where we will open to shifting and changing it instantaneously – in the live call, in an hour! I guarantee you will feel so much better after that one hour.
Don’t get me wrong, I can’t complete your shopping for you and you will still need to tackle your to-do list but it won’t feel like a carnival is following you everywhere you go and interfering with every decision you are trying to make! It’ll just feel easier and fall into place graciously!!
Join me for the . . .
Winter Blues Booster Shot! Tele-salon on Tuesdays, Dec 14th, 21st, 28th, and Jan 4th at 9pm (EST)/6pm (PST)!
Get an injection of Divine Love, Divine Support and Divine Superblast to keep you moving through the holidays with ease and grace!
- Are you struggling to get out of bed?

- This four-week tele-salon is the place to lean into for support and encouragement.
Come experience powerful shifts directly in your body and your mind – the two places that may be stressed, constricted or running in circles.

Sylvia’s Journey of Unfolding, a Testimonial
I’m really fortunate to know many of my clients both personally and professionally. I can honestly say I love this very much as through my work I see only the divine beauty and magnificence of each person exactly as who they are – it’s amazing!
So I recently sat down with Sylvia, whom I have had the pleasure of knowing as a friend and as a client, to gain more insight into what it’s been like for her to work with me over the past year and a half.
When Sylvia first came to me, she had a strong calling that she wanted to be able to stand up for herself, not in a shouting, listen-to-me sort of way, but by being truly herself and asking for what she needed in all areas of her life – work, love, community – all while amplifying the expression of her creative talents and interests.
During our sit-down she shared some powerful reflections on how her life has changed since we began our work together. She used the phrase “restored to me” – she feels she has integrated into being completely ‘herself.’ Along the way she discovered love – how to love every bit of herself: all of who she is, is perfect, even the parts that, in the past, she didn’t want to acknowledge.
As she shared with me, she said, “You know that cliché about loving yourself first before loving anything outside of yourself? Well, I totally feel it now!” Because she now loves every bit of herself – every wounded, broken, hurting, sad, angry, bewildered, struggling bit – and not just the bits that would make anyone proud, she can also wholly embrace others in love. She loves bigger now. Much bigger.
And her sense of wholeness has resulted in a deeper level of trust. First, in herself: the second-guessing is history. She feels confident in making the right choice at every turn, confident that each decision will lead exactly where she wants. Second, in dealing with others: she has started standing up for herself, something that had presented a terrifying, near-paralyzing challenge for her in the past.
Saying ‘no, thank you’ and stating her desires to her boss, friends and lovers were all cause for inner turmoil and conflicting, mixed-up feelings. No more. She tells her boss what she needs and has even asked for vacations – and been granted them – for times that might be considered inconvenient for her employer. She had never been able to do this before: she would always put what she thought should come first – outside obligations – above her needs. She now easefully sifts through offers, opportunities and invitations, accepting what feels right and turning down what doesn’t, no guilt and no explanations needed.
It must be said that Sylvia has been a strong achiever her whole life. She is greatly accomplished in academia, in her career and in her creative endeavors, and probably in everything she pursues – I know her to be an amazing and beautiful dancer. When she’s on the dance floor, everyone is captivated!
But those were largely solo pursuits; dealing with others usually took place with an undercurrent of fear and anxiety. Mind you, an outside observer would never have guessed this because she makes it all look easy. But now, for the first time in her life, she is actually experiencing her life and endeavors with great calm, ease, and peacefulness. She isn’t riding waves of fear and anxiety but has a deeper sense of trusting herself and confidence in only good things resulting from her standing up for herself – an act that as a child would result in a serious beating, physical and/or verbal. She feels safe and grounded in her body and is relating in her life from this sense of wholeness.
Much of what she shared with me isn’t quantifiable because it is a whole-body experience, a radical perspective-shift in living and truly being oneself on a day-to-day basis. But how we live our lives every day, how we relate as who we are, how we make decisions and choices, are all things that constantly affect our ability to feel grounded, connected, acknowledged, and alive, and to plug into our true sense of joy and happiness.
That said, it is still fun to share some of the extraordinary ‘quantifiable’ changes that took place for Sylvia during this past year. Can I tell you that she received two salary increases and one year-end bonus, all numerically significant and during an economic recession? That she has a new title, two new direct reports, and expanded responsibilities that directly align with her love of photography and design and that call for the use of her natural gifts and talents? And that she has taken three paid vacations in six months’ time? Holy smokes! (All this opened up to a woman who felt she couldn’t stand for herself but, as she did, everyone around her responded.)
She has explored relationships, received unbounded love like she never experienced before, and stood for herself in love, holding out for the legendary love that she is now certain she can create with a loving man. She’s currently joyfully and easefully building a relationship on her terms (and her terms are quite unique!) with a man who is also a great dancer – exactly what she’s been awaiting! – and this man tells her continually that her communication skills are phenomenal, and adores her for it!! Yowza!!!
Here’s more in her own words. . .
“I first did only four sessions with Elizabeth Joy, one per month. I enjoyed them so much that months later, when I sensed my life was gearing up for a significant transformation, I signed up for her five-month Soul Signature program. I figured the support would be nice. Nice? It was FUN! Huge fun!
Even better, I went through some intense life challenges fearlessly, feeling gently supported all along. It was awesome. But the best was this: I realized I was inhabiting my body differently, and I stood in this world differently. What a beautiful surprise!
I had been restored to the feeling of wholeness I had last experienced as a little girl. Best investment of my life, these sessions. Better than the top-notch, Ivy League education, better than living in Paris and Florence. Feeling like I never thought I’d ever feel again? Priceless.”
By watching Sylvia and other clients transform through my practice I have observed that deep transformational change occurs over time. As much as we all crave instant gratification – instant access to our intuition, instant change, instant access to great opportunities, instant new jobs and magical relationships – which all can truly arrive in seconds – the Universe is more likely to come through gently, gradually, as you openly allow the natural expansion of who you are in your life, right here and right now.
Does that mean we can’t work together in a series of short sessions to get your mojo back up and moving? Of course not! Every positive choice you make in your life counts and shifts and moves you closer to what’s truly calling through you and tapping on your shoulder.
But, if you are ready to make significant changes, moving beyond the usual patterns and habits that you’ve spent years living out, then giving yourself a significant amount of time to create the positive change you crave is the most supportive choice you can make for yourself.
It stops the urgency, the pushing, the anxiety to accomplish, start, stop or escape whatever is right in front of you. If this lands with you in just the right way. . .if reading these words resonates through your whole body, it may be time to reach out and speak with me about what’s calling your attention in your life and how I can support your journey.
I am aligning my programs to support you from this deep place of transformation. Contact me today and let’s get you scheduled for a Soul Breakthrough. You can reach me at Elizabeth@SoulCallIngsOnline.com or go directly through the website to schedule A SOUL BREAKTHROUGH.

In Appreciation of All That You Are
Today I admit I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. . . maybe it was the haziness of the morning, or the Swedish meatballs I ate yesterday, or that it feels like there is so much to be done. . .who really knows the ‘why’ – it just happens to be how I feel today.
I’m not in the mood to try to will myself out of it so I sat with it and realized what’s really tapping on my shoulder . . .is APPRECIATION. . .the need to stop and appreciate everything I’ve been creating in my life, right here, right now. I’m telling you this because . . . this includes you!
Yes, I want you right smack in the middle of my soul’s calling for appreciation. READ MORE

Living an Integrated Life
During my “re-integration period” I discovered that I had this inner calling that kept telling me something was out there that I could do that would bring me in direct experience of the divine. I didn’t know who, what or where. So I started searching. I traveled to India and studied with yoga masters, meditation teachers, and monks, visited temples and monasteries. READ MORE
